(October 17, 2019) – Each year the flu vaccination is updated to fight the most common influenza viruses of the season. SIHF Healthcare is discussing updates to the flu vaccination and what to expect the 2019 – 2020 flu season.

With it being the start of influenza (flu) season, now is the time to discuss the importance of flu shots with your healthcare provider. According to Dr. Anne Nash, “The flu does not discriminate; no matter the age, everyone is susceptible to the flu. However, people over 65 and young children are the most likely to experience more serious symptoms. Flu symptoms can last anywhere from one to two weeks and can even be deadly.”

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claim that this year, flu vaccines are updated to better match viruses expected to be circulating in the United States.

“I urge my patients to get a flu shot every year. This will build up the body’s immune system over time. It not only protects them, but their family and friends as well,” added Nash.

This year, flu shots are approved for children 6 months of age and older. There are special flu shots approved for adults over the age of 65. The CDC is recommending that people get their flu shots early this year; however, the flu shot will be available through the beginning of 2020.
